Originally bred in Germany to hunt above and below ground, the dachshund needed initiative as well as determination. Those qualities remain part of living with the breed today.
The wirehaired variety has a harsh outer coat, undercoat and distinctive beard and brows. At home, it is an attentive companion with ideas of its own. Daily activity, patient training and early socialisation deserve as much consideration as size or appearance.
A dachshund may suit a family that enjoys an involved, independent companion and can make time for walks, scent games and consistent training. Its voice, hunting instincts and need for company should be part of the decision from the start.
